He’s a 25-year-old nurse from Toronto and author of one of the latest book offerings from the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI).
If you were at STTI’s 40th Biennial Convention in Indianapolis, you may have been one of many who attended a session on social media by Robert “Rob” Fraser, RN, BScN, of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Or, you may have read the article adapted from that presentation, published a year ago in Reflections on Nursing Leadership.
Now Fraser is sharing his many insights on the use of social media in a newly released STTI book titled The Nurse’s Social Media Advantage. Whether you’re new to social media or you’re looking to effectively network and differentiate yourself, The Nurse’s Social Media Advantage will show you how.
Fraser has helped pioneer the use of social media to connect and share ideas with nurse colleagues, and The Nurse’s Social Media Advantage is the only book about social media tailored specifically for nurses. Don’t be afraid if you’re new to the topic. He covers all the basics, and the information he presents cuts across a number of platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and blogging.
The book also addresses the following topics: 1) laying the foundation, 2) understanding the building blocks of social media, 3) understanding privacy, disclaimers and professional issues, 4) improving Internet access, 5) dealing with overload, 6) developing an online reputation, 7) sharing knowledge, 8) creating quality content and 9) building your online network.
Fraser is passionate about how technology can change the way we share information. In 2008, he launched Nursing Ideas, an online nursing repository for connecting nurses and nursing students with leaders, innovators and researchers in health care. The site has attracted more than 20,000 visitors from some 110 countries.
Currently pursuing his Master of Nursing Degree at the University of Toronto, he is also a junior fellow at Massey College. The book includes a foreword by Daniel J. Pesut, PhD, RN, PMHCNS-BC, FAAN, past president of STTI.
