This Nurses Week, say ‘thank you’ via RNL!
By

This Nurses Week, say ‘thank you’ via RNL!There are some people in our lives who are standouts—people who, at a critical juncture, encouraged us to go on or challenged us to pursue excellence. In some cases, they had more faith in us than we did and, as a result, we hung in there just to fulfill their expectations, expectations that ultimately became our own.

Members of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International submitted the comments below to publicly acknowledge nurses who encouraged them and helped them along the way. RNL

First Nurse Manager, 3/30/2010
by: Ms Linda S Comer, PhD, RN, CNE
Rating: 5
Susan Helms was the inspiration in my career that led so much to the development of my professional identity. As my first nurse manager, she taught me to respect myself, the profession, the patients and families, and the leaders in nursing. She encouraged me to return to school for a masters degree, to participate actively in professional organizations, and to support my fellow nurses in their aspirations. As a mentor, she epitomized professionalism and most of all, she believed in me. Thank you, Susan, and Happy Nurses' Week!

Dr. Sara Barger at the Capstone College of Nursing at the University of Alabama is the nurse that I want to thank today. Along with being the best boss, best dean, and sincere friend, I will say that Dean Sara Barger encouraged me to remain in teaching. Her statement to me one day was, "What is it that you love to do? Then that is what you need to do." What I love to do is nursing. When new job requirements seemed overwhelming, Sara Barger had the calming voice and an available clinical option to help me find my niche in nursing. Today, I can truly say that I love what I do. Thank you, Dr. Barger. Mary Ann Kelley, DSN, RN
